Check your travel plans

Flights to popular cities are so regular that there are occasional delays, so it’s always worthwhile checking your flight information online before you leave the house, I regularyly fly with BA – here’s a handy British Airways flight tracker, just so you are informed of any potential problems. 99% of the time there aren’t any, but it’s always worthwhile to be in the loop.

Don’t forget insurance

Just because you’re only going away for a short time, don’t forget your insurance needs! Whatever your age or medical status, you will find a policy for you, provided you always declare any pre-existing medical conditions. If age is a concern, don’t let it bother you, as most companies offer policies regardless of age, although obviously the price may be a little higher. There are still some great value policies for travel insurance for over 70s, so never be tempted to travel without.

Book accommodation centrally

Whilst it’s always going to be cheaper to book accommodation outside of a city centre, it’s a false economy, because you’ll spend money travelling into the centre every day. Spend a bit of time looking around at cost-effective hotels and B&Bs in a central location, and you’ll also save your feet!

Do some research before you go

If you’re only in the city for a short period of time, you don’t want to waste your precious days on things that you don’t really want to see, so do some research before you go, perhaps on Trip Advisor, at the best sightseeing opportunities. If there are things you definitely want to see, find out the best ways to get there and the best places to go, and factor in everything around it.

Book tables in advance

The biggest restaurants are obviously the most popular, and you might find there’s a waiting list for a table. Check this out before you even leave and ring ahead to book, saving time in the long-run. This way you get to eat at the place you’ve been dreaming of.

Don’t try to do too much

If you’re only going for a weekend, you’re not going to see everything, so make peace with this before you go and you won’t be disappointed. Instead, prioritise and you won’t be leaving to head back home feeling like you need another holiday to get over it!
