An airport is generally an aerodrome with long runways, usually for commercial aircraft. Commercial airports often have a control tower and facilities to house and store aircraft. If the airport has a helipad then that too is a common feature on many airports. There are also small, portable airports which may be found in the countryside or on the outskirts of town.
There are two main types of airports, the small and medium airports. These can be found almost anywhere, both urban and rural areas. Some of these airports can be seen from the road, but others are so far away they will not be easily seen by motorists unless they drive close to them. A commercial airport, such as Heathrow, Manchester, Stansted and Gatwick, are all part of the larger airports and are generally considered ‘city airports’.
Many large cities also have some kind of airport, either as part of a larger airport or in a separate area of land, like a golf course. In the USA, Denver, Phoenix and Salt Lake City are just some of the most popular airports in this country. In fact, the US Department of Transportation actually publishes a list of “The Ten Best Largest Urban Areas” which includes three major airports. This is because the city of Phoenix, Arizona and Denver, Colorado are located right on the interstate highway system, making it easy to travel between cities. This is in contrast to smaller cities, like Tucson, which must rely on rail and road to get in and out of the city.
Airways can be run between two large airports, in which case the name is interchange airport and intra-city airport, but they are also used between the same airports which are separated by a line of highways. In this case the airport name is terminal airport and the name of the airport that is separated by highways is the regional airport.
The United Kingdom has four major international airports. These are London’s Heathrow, Luton, Stansted and Gatwick. Other smaller airports include Birmingham and Manchester, both of which are located on the major roads that run between the larger airports. In addition, there are some remote areas of the UK, including the Faro and Bournemouth and even more remote areas of mainland Europe.
Australia has one of the largest number of international airports in the world, mainly due to the large number of large airline companies based in Australia. The largest is the Sydney International Airport. The second largest is Brisbane’s International Airport. Perth is also an important airport.
The United States has its own significant number of international airports in major cities like Houston, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. New Orleans has its own small airport, which is operated by the Louisiana State University. Other cities like Dallas, Miami and Orlando have their own airports which serve smaller local communities.
Airways in Canada are very similar to those in the United States, though the size of the airports is much smaller. In fact, the only Canadian airports are in Toronto and Montreal.
A small city on the west coast of North America, Portland, Oregon has its own airport. Anchorage, Alaska also has a small airport, which is not used as much as it once was.
The largest airport in New Zealand, Auckland, is located just outside of Auckland and is separated from the main airport. It serves as a point of entry to many small communities located near the main airport.
There are airports in the Netherlands, too, which is another country located close to the US border. The Amsterdam is the largest airport in the Netherlands. which is located in Amsterdam, which has many small communities that are separated by highways and other means of transport.
Many of these airports in the United States, particularly the major ones, are used every day by commercial airlines and people all over the world. People fly from these airports to cities all over the world, sometimes for a short period of time.
