You’re not alone!

Remembering to do everything you need before you go away on holiday can be a minefield. You’re so excited about going away to explore that new destination, chill out on an exotic beach, and basically escape from run of the mill stresses and strains, that it’s easy to overlook some of the important extras that need to run alongside your holiday booking.

Have you ever been out shopping and then suddenly remembered something you need to do, but then swiftly forgotten again? I used to do this all the time, and it stressed me right out! A good way around it is to carry a notepad and pen with you, and as soon as that idea pops into your head, scribble it down, and you’re free to carry on with your day. Alternatively, mobile phones are a great way to note things down so you don’t forget.

If you’re not sure what extras I’m talking about, other than your usual flight, transfer, and accommodation set-up, then you might be surprised to hear that there are a few other bits and bobs that are just as important!

Take your passport for example. Now, we all know not to forget this important document when travelling, but how many of you remember to look at its validity? It doesn’t just have to be in date, it has to cover you for the time you’re away, and also for around six months after you return. Certain destinations do vary on this exact amount of months, but be sure to check this information out, and the date on your passport well ahead of time, in case you need an early renewal.

Another thing is visas. For most common holiday destinations you probably won’t need one, but it does depend on your country of origin, the passport you hold, and a few other factors, so again, check this out well ahead of time. Some destinations require you to apply online for an e-visa, such as Turkey, and the ESTA system in the USA. Simply follow the instructions, print out the confirmation, and take it with you.

How do you get to the airport? Don’t forget this vitally important step! Driving yourself and parking up, using a company with great value fares, such as the Airparks company I used for my last trip, is a better idea than public transport. If you’re able to drive, I’d recommend this suggestion myself. I regularly use parking at Manchester Airport, as it suits my needs down to the ground, however most large UK airports have a similar service.

Do I need to remind you about insurance? Never travel without a good quality travel insurance policy, and remember to declare any pre-existing medical conditions at the time too. Again, print out your confirmation, make a note of the claim number in your phone, and take it with you. It might be an idea to have a small plastic folder to take your important documents in, so they don’t get lost.

Health-wise, remember to check with your GP whether you need any additional immunisations, and make sure you have enough of your regular medications.

These are the main things you need to remember without fail prior to your holiday. The rest, such as remembering your toothbrush, can be sorted out at a later date!
